I'm having a weird problem getting my computer to be able to type chinese characters. I went through the whole process of adding East Asian languages, added the chinese keyboard, everything worked properly but when I go to type I don't get the typical dropdown of characters.

For example when I type "wo" I should see a dropdown of all the wo characters, instead I just see the letters "wo_" in a dropdown. If I hit enter, the actual character 我 will appear I just can't see the choices. Anyone ever seen this? It happens in every program I try and I'm using XP.

My GF is from China and helped me set it up and said she's never seen this before. Not really sure how to google this either. Screenshots:
