Trying to match light cotton sportscoat with trousers or jeans

I am thinking of buying the Billy Reid cotton summer suit as depicted on actor Frecheville in the attached photo.

It's a casual summer cotton suit. My question is: if I wear the jacket separately, as a sports coat, can I wear colored jeans with the sportcoat? I was thinking slim (not skinny) colored jeans, maybe a darker tan, a lighter khaki or mid-brown colored jeans, or jeans with golden veneer. I was also considering levi 501's...

Do you agree with the slim colored jeans choice as a more casual alternative to the light tan cotton suit look? Thanks for your opinion.
