Kind of a noob question but hopefully quick and easy....

I've recently got into buying quality shoes and its quickly becoming a hobby (addiction). But its hard to know which brands aren't cheaply made or made by children - you know what I mean.

Can I get some quick recommendations of brands (regardless of shoe style at the moment) that one can get from online retail (like zappos, etc.) that are from quality makers and aren't cheap sweatshop knock-offs? I've noticed for a noob its hard to even know if your every day Allen Edmonds is going to be quality or made by hands of someone who cares about what they're doing. Am I making sense? When I buy a shoe, I don't want the "made in italy" label if doesn't really man anything. Who are the brand I can trust? I wear mostly leather loafers, driver sole shoes, some oxfords, lots of slip ons. A few seude chukkas. I'm usually in the $200-$400 range for shoes, sometimes more.

    Thanks!

You can have full confidence in Allen Edmonds. If their shoes fit me better, I would own more of them.

Some of the alden calfskin models run $300-$450ish. Carmina, a litte over $400.

Alfred Sargent, Kent Wang, and Andrew Lock all fall in your price range.

I started a thread about getting a nice suit, but the discussion has evolved and turned into being about shoes for the last few posts.

But be careful—the more people answer and the more you look into it, the more you'll want to spend $1500 on a pair of shoes. I was expecting to look at shoes in the $400 range, but suddenly am seriously considering spending $1000.

And don't worry about shoes being made by children. Children have small and nimble hands that are perfect for making your Nikes.

Also, if you do go with Allen Edmonds, "doctorman" mentioned in my thread "if you want to save a few dollars, you can go try on a few pairs of AE - just to find out what lasts fit you the best and order the factory seconds from the freeport, maine store. i'm sure manager edward wickham will be careful to pick out a pair of seconds that look just like the firsts; i've had great experience there."
