Trying to avoid separates, but at a loss

Hi, long-time lurker, first-time poster.

I'm a 40 jacket with a 31 waist--hell, a 30 in some brands. So when I try on suits, if the jacket fits, the pants look like Hammer pants. I'm 6'1 and very thin (well apparently my shoulders are fairly normal and it's just the rest of me that's freakishly thin).

I've solved this by buying suit separates for my first two suits. They served me fine for what I needed them for, but I just passed the bar and I feel like it's time to step up to a real suit.

So what do you suggest?

I've been looking for slim-fit suits with big drops, but it seems like there's nothing out there higher than a 7 in. drop. (BB Madison and Regent are drop-7, but not exactly slim.) Any other recommendations?

Or should I focus less on the drop and just expect that a tailor will need to make major alterations? How much can a tailor take in before the whole thing just turns into a mess? 3-4 in out of the waist? Slim down the legs?

Thanks in advance. This forum's been a god-send... and that's before I've ever even posted.

If you're pretty confident your waist will stay around there, one option is made to measure. Prices are a bit steeper, but they'll fit.

Go the custom route, mtm or bespoke. It is probably more expensive then getting a Brooks suit; however, if the suit lasts a long time, money well spent.

Concerning waist size (as mentioned by the Ike), request extra cloth so if your waist changes, the trousers can be adjusted. Some of my trousers have more spare cloth then others and it is useful to have, especially if you want your trousers to last a long time.

When you say 30 in some brands do you mean dress pants ? Even so with vanity sizing they could be anything.

Taking pants in a couple of inches isn't major surgery.

Have you tried on pants from a 38 suit? How well would they fit you? If they're okay then you likely be fine with a 40 and having the pants adjusted.

You don't say what your budget is.

Look at (even) slimmer fit suits - many of the suits I fit the jacket of are drop 8 which means the pants are ridiculously small (who the **** is a 28?). Try some Italian brands and you should have better luck than with Brooks.

Or mtm, etc.

MTM is the best solution for you.

Bespoke if you can afford it.

Are you sure you're a 40 jacket? you may find a few 38's that are generously cut which will end up being slim for you and the pants will fit.

Some jackets in smaller sizes fit like a size larger. I've found that Joseph Abboud 36 fits me, whereas I wear 38 in most everything else. Heck, a lot of brands size 40 fits me in the shoulders and I just take in the chest and waist. You can always recut the pants too.

That said, 2" is nothing major. I need to chop off 3" from 32" pants which are usually vanity sized, so I'd have to chop off an actual 4-5", making it impossible for most brands. Hence, I've given up. Luckily I have four suits and can buy a Joseph Abboud if I am in need of a something really quick or cheap.
