Trouble in purple

I have bought two otherwise nice made to measure shirts recently - a light blue end-on-end spread collar and a navy blue OCBD. My only problem is that both of the blues have a slightly purple cast. The light blue is somewhat ‘periwinkle’ - a warmish blue/lilac, and the navy is a brighter/richer tone than dull near black I expected.

I don’t dislike either of the colours in themselves but I find it difficult to judge how to pair them with other colours/shades - either suit/tie for the lighter one or casual/sport coat combinations for the OCBD.I had anticipated wearing the navy OCBD with brown jackets, but the brighter purplish tone doesn’t seem to allow that when I have tried. Equally, blue on blue tonal combinations which I sometimes like don’t seem to work either.

Suggestions welcome!

Gray suit or jacket? Gray goes with most colors.

Grey works ok for a suit but greyer sports coats are less flexible of course, still not sure about tie colour but yellow seems to work well with the periwinkle.

I would provide pics but they are unlikely to show the purple cast. Will just look like light and dark blue but in real life they are just different from my other light and dark blues,

Consult the colourwheel, works for me if I'm unsure

Paul Smith tend to use a lot of purples (like a house colour) might be worth having a look at the website

I like pastel purple with both blue and navy. It's more wearable than you might think, a lot like a pale pink can be. Jimi Williamson wears purple with The Anthology's Shaggy Dog here:

For more adventurous pairings, you might try yellow cords ("complementary"), or a green jacket and some orange tone somewhere ("triadic secondary"). I don't place much weight in color theory, but I think of it as just another idea of what to try on. You still have to actually try it to see if it works.

Anyway, you might want to talk to the company about returning one of the shirts... but consider keeping at least one, purple is great.

I think you can wear those two shirts with tan trousers and a navy sport coat.

imho purple is a great, versatile color esp for a shirt

as it will both pick up - and mute - blue and/or red

think chocolate or donegal/multi type sc or suit , lavender shirt , paisley or madder silk
