Trenchcoat Appropriate for Toronto Weather?

So I recently decided to stop plain old tshirts, jeans and sneakers and dress a little better.

I've always thought trenchcoats looked really polished and wanted one.

My questions are really about when I could wear it, if I bought one.

Is it appropriate for the weather in Toronto? Right now it's 12C, and it gets as low as -20C I guess. I imagine I'd only be able to wear it in the Fall and Spring?

Also, is it ok to wear on just on chilly days, or do I wear it only on days when it rains?

Can I wear it with jeans (nice proper fitting jeans)?

Finally, I'm really slim (36R), do I get a DB or a SB one?

I can't afford a Burberry one right now, but I saw one in at H&M (I know a lot of you might groan at that), and thought it was really cool. IT was not lined however.

So finally, would it sit in my wardrobe unworn if I bought one?

Thanks for the kind answers, first time poster, occasional lurker.

A trench is a raincoat and a chilly day coat. DB, it's a requirement for a trench. If it's SB, you can still have a nice raincoat, but it won't be a trenchcoat. Most of those that you'll see are what's known as a macintosh. Those are a perfectly fine choice as well, if a tad boring.

Style: wear one with whatever you want. Remember, the trench originated in the trenches of WWI. It's first and foremost a practical item, albiet a well styled one.

As for warmth, with a thick wool sweater and the lining in you should be fine to around -20C. The days that get down to -20F (-30C) may be a little more questionable. I don't know how many of those you get. Certainly for the coldest days of winter you're going to want a wool overcoat.

I should have mentioned mentioned that I do indeed have a very thick and heavy wool coat for the coldest winter days; it's a necessity as you pointed out.

The problem with Toronto weather is it's either bitterly cold or blistering hot.

If you need a trench for those few weeks of shoulder season then go for it. But some years you'll barely wear it I bet.

Still if the price is reasonable then getting a few weeks in April and then again in the fall could be worth it.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
