Pretty much same as the title, im wondering if its possible to wear the typical raincoat trench coats in the winter; if you bundle up warmly underneath it? Im talking canadian winters here, just so you know.

I wouldn't/don't wear my trench in Indiana winters but I see others do it. A trench is just not warm enough for me, even with a liner. It's much colder in your parts than here, but YMMV.

It really cold weather what makes me feel toasty is wearing a hat, gloves and scarf. I'm seldom cold through the body if layered-up so, yes, I have been wearing thin trenchcoat macs in very cold weather at times. This winter, at least since Christmas, an inexpensive longer-than-average navy wool peacoat has been coat of choice though.

In my experience staying warm this winter has been more about constricting layers. With a tight wool turtleneck underneath a button-down its often enough that any 3rd layer will keep me completely warm, even if its a bit thin.

might help to state which city. Canada is the second largest country. too many different climates.

generally i go:
no rain: wool coat
rain: trench. don't want to ruin my nice wool. i'll just wear something warm underneath.

I've done it for years, long navy button-front London Fog trench/raincoat with zip-in lining. Add hat, gloves & a scarf & it's done me well. Of course, that's on top of a suit & in NYC one is never outdoors long enough to get frostbitten.

you could wear a trench coat; you would just have to layer more. Why not just get another coat? Or an arsenal of coats! What I dislike about winter is how everybody has only one look when they're outside.

Don't know about Canada winters, but I wear mine occasionally in winter. If it's wet but not too cold, a trench is great. If it's cold but not particularly wet, I go for an overcoat. Keeping it simple!
