trench coat/rain coat

I've brought up black raincoats on Ask Andy before, and there were some comments to the effect that according on one of the well-known clothing writers' research (not Flusser, but I can't remember which one now), black trench coats carry a working-class connotation. No links were posted then, and I haven't had the time to do the research myself.

That said, personally I find traditional DB, belted raincoats a little busy for my taste. But I do have a more streamlined black beltelss SB raincoat that I like wear a lot in the wintertime. With the fleece lining in, it's warm enough for all but the coldest weather, and the water-resistant finish (the shell itself is cotton) keeps me dry. I bought it at Banana Republic two years ago, so clearly it was marketed to the 25-34 demographic.

Many years ago, John Malloy extensively wrote of this in "Dress for Success". I've only worn tan raincoats since.

I recall reading somewhere that the reason for the connection is that a black coat requires less frequent cleaning which would save the owner money.

I am just curious about the black leather trench coat? Is it still considered stylish or outdated now please?

I have one that I still wear (or used too, possibly depending on overall replys and possible links to them now being passe' )

 seems akin to stating everyone wearing a blue pinstriped suit is in the mafia or a banker.

<smiles> Considering I am prematurely gray haired ( hey I am only in my mid 40s  ) and the fact that is is not a 100.00 wilson leather goods or what have you piece mill coat, the mafioso part would probably be more beleiveable.

Seriously, the coat is treated yearly and still could pass for very lightly worn even though years old. I was just curious if many of in the larger metro areas considered it fashionably proper/respectable today.

I own a light tan (almost ivory) trench coat - simple, single-brested - that I like to wear unbuttoned over a pale shirt, navy pinstripe trousers and brown loafers. I think it's a great look for spring.

27 now, and I've worn a black Chaps db trench since I first came to the city in 99.

It's pretty hammered now and I'm thinking I'll replace with the cleanest-line light tan coat I can find. (By clean I mean minimal straps, belts, buttons, flaps, etc.)

Any suggestions on the best designers of such simple coats? Best place to buy them? (bonus points if they make or fit "tall" sizes and I'm 6'5" and find that some raincoats are too short in the sleeve but cannot be altered)

When I see a black leather trench coat (or any leather coat that hits below mid-thigh, for that matter), I think "Steven Seagal."  And not the cool, young guy who kicked butt in "Above The Law," but the paunchy, middle-age guy stuck doing Mountain Dew commercials and straight-to-DVD movies with Asian directors.  That said, if you like how it looks on you, don't let the opinions of anonymous posters on an internet forum tell you otherwise.

You mean, The Executive? I wear a tan macintosh. Very simple, looks a lot like this. It was a hand-me-down from my father - I get more compliments on it than any other coat I have. Just goes to show ya...

I wear a bright orange very fitted short trench coat on the occasion. I should probably get something slightly more traditional.

That is because they choose to wear hoodies instead. Invest in a proper raincoat please
