Treating Leather Briefcase

Hi all -

Just bought a brown leather briefcase from Coach. To protect the leather, should I just polish the leather as I would with a new pair of shoes, or should I treat it differently? I have been told to spray the leather with a water-resistant product, but am concerned that this may damage/dry it. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Depends on what kind of look you're going for. If you're okay with the leather darkening and having a matte finish, try something like mink oil or neatsfoot oil. That protects the leather from the elements and keeps it in good condition. If you want to keep it shiny, a cream conditioner/polish would be a good choice. But if it's not too late you could also return it and get a good briefcase from a different maker instead.

Coach leather is really soft, always makes me think of women's handbags. I've never seen an old coach bag that looked good whereas bridle leather improves with age. With what bags cost, do you really want a diminishing asset> B

I would use Saphir Renovateur and then buff it. I wouldn't think it would need it often though. Just brushing would be good and every once in a while the reno. Briefcases aren't exposed to extreme creasing and sweat at the same time like shoes so no worries. A less than perfect bag is a beautiful bag in my opinion.

OP, what colour is your briefase? Post photos of the briefcase please.
Never use shoe polish on a briefcase because the polish will rub off onto your clothes.
As suggested previously, you may use a leather conditioner.
Apply sparingly and use your fingers or a clean rag to apply.
Rub the conditioner into the leather. Let dry several hours, then use a clean dry rag to buff the leather after. Repeat every 2-4 months or so.

I've had a Coach briefcase for about 3 years and have been really happy with it. Paid about $225, so I don't think it was a bad deal. I have done nothing except carry it everywhere and the leather seems to be holding up fine, even developing a nice worn in look. That said, some type of moisturizing treatment would probably be a good idea every few years.
