Travel in the south of France- anything I should know?

If you can reschedule your southern visit any other time, it's highly recommend. Why not enjoy the tranquility of the Bretagne or the countryside of Alsace over the chaos of the southern coasts at this time of year? If not, I highly recommend Nice. This, obviously, did not answer your specific question, but is a thought I wished to pass along.

France is not only Paris or Cannes and other place gauche similar of this, go in small village agricole for see other mode de vie, is a big connerie if go only in Paris + Cannes!
