1. And... we're back. You'll notice that all of your images are back as well, as are our beloved emoticons, including the infamous :foo: We have also worked with our server folks and developers to fix the issues that were slowing down the site.

There is still work to be done - the images in existing sigs are not yet linked, for example, and we are working on a way to get the images to load faster - which will improve the performance of the site, especially on the pages with a ton of images, and we will continue to work diligently on that and keep you updated.

    Cheers,

Thankyouthankyouthankyou. I've been trying to deal with my impending blindness all day. I thought for sure something was wrong with my eyes.

Am I correct in understanding that attachments to posts dings the server for the bandwidth? I rarely attach, but just did so, (a middling 5kb file though) and it made me wonder. Would disabling that feature keep the data transfers down?

It would, but at the moment bandwidth isn't the problem, it's the load on the server resources (CPU and memory). The attachments come from the database (IIRC), which is on a different server than the web stuff, which I think would mean that they wouldn't tax the web server. The database server is for the most part doing all right with the load - it's the web server that runs all the scripts and serves up button/logo images etc. that's hurting.

New features hacked in: "Next and Previous" threads replaced by thread titles at the bottom of the thread (see above quick reply box). Also, "My Posts" link - hit the little arrow for a dropdown "My Posts/My Threads (threads you started)" menu.

YES!! Thank you for the My Posts/Threads link. Saves me from going to the main page + my profile...

Also, is it just me or is the site really slow since yesterday?

Few things are as entertaining as a daft spammer posting on a thread pertaining to bannings and flushings [IMG]

    That was awesome.

Please try not to quote links, it feeds the spam.

The "Tony Snow - Best Dressed Man in Washington" thread has gone bye-bye as it had gone from any sort of discussion about Snow, his clothing or his cancer, to ad hominem attacks on the administration and various SF members.

Were there any time-outs or bannings(?) that resulted from that thread? Many of the posts seemed to be in violation of the new 'will be enforced' rules....

I noticed on AskAndy that when you post pictures and "Preview Post," the images appear in the editing window. This is very very helpful. Would be great if we had that here.

I didn't realize that - I'll be careful going forward.

Switch your editor mode to WYSIWYG mode - the button on the upper right of the grey editor box with a plain A and a Bold Italic Underlined A.
