So during my recent trip to NYC, walking around with my messenger proved tiresome, and I dont like the fact that I look like a student walking around, b/c I'm older now.

saw some dudes w/ totes, and it seems very functional, and at times, I like the look. i'm just concerned about looking too femme and/or too fashion-y, which I don't want. any personal takes on the tote bag look?

kinda diggin the EG one on hejfina

I just got this from Japan a few days ago, it's used primarily as my book bag for college.

I think they look excellent, especially added to more "masculine" outfits (say boots, t-shirt, jeans).

I use a filson zippered tote. I don't think it looks femme or fashion-y. I use it quit a bit and it's the most functional bag for me.

Just checked with Hejfina, the EG tote doesn't have any zippers or interior compartments. Would've liked a zippered pocket or two in there, help keep things in order.

I'll second the Filson zippered tote. I use it for my laptop and paperwork and as an overnight bag.

I was bringing a bunch of crap to work the other day and used my Filson zippered tote.
Two different people asked if I was carrying a human head.

The best bang for buck is the Frost River totes. Waxed cotton. Leather handles on some. Optional leather bottoms. Made in USA.

The WM J Mills bags are great, but not waxed cotton----material is used also for awnings and boat-covers to give you a sense of its toughness. Of particular interest is the ice bag, big, tough, and priced nicely.

I do like the Steven Alan totes, but they are more expensive than the two above, but not prohibitively so. I just find them a bit more awkward to carry.

The Jack Spade totes are amazing but I just can't understand expensive totes.

I have been eye-ing the Filson tote, too. These can be obtained through the Crane's affiliate at a good price, I imagine. Might as well have the best, right? You can carry Volkswagen engines in these, the story goes.

Well not in the tote but you can carry a bug engine in the large duffel bag.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
