On a different note (from surfwear brands)- I've got a pair of old jeans that are worn to **** and are about to fall apart- I won't toss them for sentimental reasons. What's the best way to go about patching? Do y'all cut away the frayed areas around the hole before patching or just toss another piece of denim on there and sew away? I've seen it done both ways and wanted to know which turned out better.

Trim the fraying or leave it if it is still partially intact, use a different shade of denim, sew it in a patch around the whole on the inside with a straight stitch. Then use the largest zigzag stitch you have to sew the frayed whole down onto the new denim patch. Use a different colour if you think it will match without looking tacky.
