I learned that:

1. brown is for farmers;
2. the Mens Wearhouse is not just evil, but pure evil;
3. Persian rugs are almost as important to the proper maintenance of shoes as trees and good quality polish;
4. wearing black suits to work causes Manton's head to explode;
5. the SF constitutes 113% of the overseas business of Ricky Ho;
6. cats have possies
7. Nantucket Reds IS the luckiest SOB; and
8. that there is a wonderful corner of the universe where like minded individuals can come together and reasonably (most of the time) discuss things sartorial.

I agree with the brown shoes, but I think I learned about all kinds of shoes here. I can't give monks all the love.

I can't begin to count, really. An SF'er, for example, was with me when I bought my first pocket square.

I learned that there are "sartorialists" lurking in the corners of places of employment just itching to tell you that your lapels are 1/8" too narrow and workplace-inappropriate. I can only assume these people are nullos.

Not true. A smirk at most, and I'd take care to ensure that you don't even notice it.

Good to hear. Now I will not have to stress out about adding other colors.

good thread!
here's what i've learned thru my experience and the forum:

+ don't underestimate the value of a well made shirt that fits you (most importantly, in the sleeve length; collar that isn't skimpy, and forms an inverted V when worn with a tie). i made so many mistakes over the past 10 years, it cost me a lot of lost $$. my lessons yielded best shirts for me = Luigi Borrelli, Robert Talbott Estate, and one Brioni MTM just because I wanted to do it once.

+ stitching over fused suits-- this is one of the most important lessons to be learned.

+ if you make the right connections/ know the right places to look, you don't always have to pay retail for a well tailored suit or sportcoat....or trousers and shirts, for that matter (see point number one, however, correct sleeve length can be hard to find)

+ John Lobb shoes make you feel like a million bucks. Edward Green shoes are also excellent.

+ For me, the best suits and sportcoats are Brioni, Oxxford Clothes, and Isaia. Ralph Lauren Purple label is also very nice, and E. Zegna are also a nice fit but the handwork is much, much less.

+ If you're over 32, you just gotta own a nice hat. Even if you rarely wear it.

+ everyone should own a cool pair of jeans, which means you gotta spend more than $150. I know, it's tough to shell out that kind of $$ for denim.

+ next time you are buying a wristwatch, sweater, polo shirt, or a pair of sunglasses, consider buying from the resources consulted for the latest Bond film. They are all classic, and only you will know you share something in common with James Bond.
