Okay, I don't really mean top shelf as the phrase is typically used to connote luxury liquors. But what I'm looking for is good quality stuff that's at a student friendly pricepoint. Interesting and offbeat stuff or good, simple staples, whatever. I'm sure the collective wisdom of this forum can come up with a few good ones.

Russian standard vodka. Very smooth with a crisp taste. Good enough to drink straight and get your friends smashed for under $30.

Totally possible if you live near a liquor store with a lot of imports and big selection. What kind of prices you talking?

I'm talking below $20ish for a liter. And preferably something available in smaller sizes, but neither of those are hard and fast rules.

<$20 for 1L is going to be tough. Russian Standard and Tito's are two vodka's off the top of my head. Can't think of a good cheap tequila or rum.

I don't think top shelf can come on a student budget.

I like plymouth gin tho. Still have not gone to a proper bar that stocks plymouth

Top shelf was more the attention grabbing keyphrase for the headline and not so much an actual goal. Basically I'm looking for cheaper liquors that a discerning drinker would be fine drinking even if they wouldn't be the first choice. Think the Evan Williamses of the world.

Sucks for you, but in rural upstate NY that seems to be a fairly middle of the road price. For reference, a liter of Beefeater is around the $25 pricepoint here. I picked up a liter of Evan Williams for 13. Also, USD, not CAD. Keep in mind that you use monopoly money up there.

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
