Some of us on the West Coast had not yet seen the episode when you made your comment. Maybe we could have some sort of unwritten rule that East Coast fans will not spoil it for the rest of us until the show has aired here, first? Or, in lieu of that, maybe you could start your post by stating: "Spoiler Alert!"

Spoiler Alert! Posts after the show's scheduled East Coast time may contain a spoiler alert - read this thread later.

I don't see why not, the masters do it. Any lost revenue would be made up in future exposure.

I'd venture that a good number (if not all) of the masters no longer cook in their restaurants on a daily basis.

^^ haha, I'm watching it too. I think because she's the only girl on the show pretty enough to make fun of, b/c he couldn't possible be serious.

I sort of wonder if the producers are egging on the contestants more and more, after the emotional train wreck of Just Desserts.

    What do you mean?

Note*- I didn't catch Just Desserts.

just caught up with my dvr. to me, the jen thing was more along the lines of "why did i sign up for this thing? i don't like it and I'm not having fun and ... hey! i've already got my performance fee ... might as well go out smoking?"

but i agree. this was a stupid challenge.

Not so sure I agree with this. The coolest dish I think Alinea has ever done was the amuse that was a take on the Peanut Butter and Jelly (it's listed in their cookbook).

The chefs could have more than done something similar had they wanted to and the challenge, IMO, highlighted a real lack of creativity in the contestants.

perhaps. but the difference is that Alinea's not actually having to SERVE those to kids ... this one had to be food that was attractive to children. i'm not sure a powder of peanuts and a powder of grape jelly would actually be that appealing to 12-15 age group.

[IMG] The dish wasn't two powders. It was actually a pretty sick dish that represented their whole idea very well as a beginning.

But everybody knows the best dish is hot potato cold potato or BTE.

Achatz was also not on a TIME LIMIT when he created that, and he probably went through some bad iterations before it made it to the menu. It's really apples to oranges. But, Count, if you'd like to go straight to the thesis that Achatz is the chef at the "best restaurant in America" and these guys are on a game show... that's probably valid too.

I think my beef is that their dislike of the challenge led to glorified hotel food. I thought the snack bags showed much more creativity than their main courses and in lots less time.

Maybe there were some other constraints on the contestants, but I think a more experienced challenge chef could have done something fun. I'm sure the lack of sleep did not help the creative thought process either.

My point in mentioning achatz is that fun alternatives exist, even in fine dining. That was certainly a complaint by lots of the chefs during the show, that this challenge was sooo beneath them.

You're right... the attitudes were uncalled for. Just sayin' the results were not awful given the constraints.. I think Tom C's expectations may have been too high.

Just watched the second episode, I still don't understand why she Jen didn't say Jamie did nothing? Is she really that stubborn? Her conviction would save her? [IMG]

Yeah I guess, it's just that she seems so competitive. "Second place is last place" etc....
