I could make all of them Beach Boys tunes but I decided to be fair to the other bands.

Please share your top 5 for summer..the songs that get you grooving going to the beach or like me trying to stay cool in the heat of the city.

Here is my list:

1.)The Warmth of the Sun - Beach Boys
2.)Surf City - Dan & Jean
3.)Hotel California - The Eagles
4.)Rockin Down the Highway - Doobie Brothers (thanks Stax

5.)Boys of Summer - Don Henley

i was going to suggest the don henley song as a joke, but now i see it's there on the OP post so nevermind.

i second Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly and the Family Stone, also any good 'shag' beach music by bands such as the drifters, the platters, etc.

school's out - alice cooper
sunshine superman - donovan
saturday in the park - chicago
summer in the city - lovin' spoonful
summer of '69 - bryan adams

here's my worst summer song of all time:
summer girls - lfo

Cherry Pez,cold crush,rock star boogie
Used to hate school so I had to play hookie,
Always been hip to the B-boY Style
Known to act wild and make girls smile,
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Remind me of you because you rock my world
You come from Georgia where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock n roll
Dad took off when you were 4 years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better baby when you're near
You love fun dip and cherry Coke,
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you I said my name was Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch
OH MY GOD! What the *$%#@ is that all about?!!

just about anything by the Red House Painters reminds me of summertime.

and of course, Don Henley's Boys of Summer.

77 WABC in New York replays oldies (and old jingles) from 6pm-10pm on Saturday night. A lot of the music is classic AM "beach music." Even listening on the internet, you get the feeling like you're on Coney Island with a transistor radio.

Oh, anything Beach Boys, obviously, and most Jan & Dean, too. Mainly the car songs do it for me -- Little GTO, Deadman's Curve, 409, Shutdown, et al. Also, the Gin Blossoms' Hey Jealousy.

Hope it doesn't shatter the image, but Surf City's in New Jersey. Hey, there may be one in CA as well, though I've only been in the one.

Regards,
Huntsman

i think it's interesting that 'beach music' means different things on the east and west coast. (probably north and south as well.) i think generally in the west you've got surf music, and in the east you've got motown, at least in the southeast you do. had to do with club owners who put all this 'verboten' music from up north in their jukeboxes and all the kids went to the beach in the summer to listen to what they couldn't hear at home.
