I'm trying to get a handle on pocket squares but I'm finding it hard to figure out what goes with what. I'm hoping this thread will give me some building blocks to mess around with. So...

What are the top five most versatile pocket squares? I know the top slot will go to a simple white linen/silk one, and that everyone has different tastes, but I'm looking for the pocket square equivalent of the navy or black grenadine tie - pocket squares that are timeless and will go with a wide variety of outfits/colors.

As always, thanks for your help.

there are people who can give better advice than me but I'd say go with conservative patterns. Other than cream silk, solid squares are boring IMO. I have a nice red one with these small, light blueish dot like things that is pretty versatile. A navy one with staid dots would be timeless, that sort of stuff. simple geometric shapes with conservative colors if in doubt.

I'm not the best at this but i would have to say that ps 101 is best learnt by checking out Will's ASW site. Contrasting colors and textures are laid out nicely there.

I prefer linen and/or cotton with worsted and silk with cashmere and/or tweed. But, those aren't hard and fast rules for me.

Good starters include: white linen and light blue linen, light pink gingham is another good starter. After that figure out what you like. Don't match your tie and you'll be okay.
