What is a test of a jacket being too wide in the chest? Is it too large if I can fit a clenched fist in the jacket when the jacket is buttoned?

The most obvious effect an oversized chest will have is visible in the back around the armpits where the fabric will crease in unflattering ways while your arms are by your side and the jacket is buttoned. If the suit is too small in the chest then again in the same area you will see the fabric stretching, but you may also see the jacket refuse to lay flat against the chest and bulge out while buttoned.

Your question is confusing. Where are you putting your fist to judge the chest size? If the chest is large it is full and loose fitting across your chest and under your arm You can tell by looking. If you are buttoning the jacket and can fit your hand under the button then the waist is too big, not the chest. Have someone measure your chest to know what size you are, then try on the size you measure then one size larger and one size smaller and you will learn the difference.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
