Tom Ford suit: Is it worth getting tailored?

Hey SFers,

I just bought a Tom Ford suit, and am conflicted on whether to return it, or see if I can get it tailored to fit well.

I am a 44r in most brands such as Brioni, so I bought the Tom Ford in 46r since I have read they fit small.

The fit is a "Basic Base A", I'm guessing I would have done better with a "Basic Base B". The Tom Ford fits well in the shoulders, sleeves are fine, and overall length is also good. However, the chest and waist are really big and look like they need to be taken in several inches.
The pants are also about 5"+ too big in the waist (40" now, need them to be ~35")

I am concerned that it needs to be taken in too much everywhere and will not look right after it has been altered.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Outcome?

Thanks in advance.
(Will post pictures tonight)

Where did you buy it and why did you buy a suit that is 5 inches too large in the waist?

Tried to take pictures myself, but need to wait for someone to take them so they don't come out so terrible.

What sort of build are you? From what you've said it seems you're built almost exactly like a silverback gorilla.

Mind you, if it was a great deal for the TF suit... I would have been tempted to buy it even though I know it'd be a big tailoring job ahead...

Athletic build, mesmorph, 5'10".

My shoulders are usually what get me into trouble when it comes to buying a suit. I'm quite use to having to get the pants taken quite a bit to fit a 34-35" waist.

That was exactly the case. It was originally ~$4000-$5000 and I paid a fraction of that.

when you say shoulders, do you mean including the lats and the back, or literally just the deltoids?

Yep. Big lats, back, and delts. I've been lifting for years so I have that build.

Get the suit tailored. If it is only 1 size up on the 44R you usually go by, it is no big deal. Just take it to a good tailor - it is a piece of cake alteration.

However, the pants alteration may be pretty major - you are asking a tailor to drop it 3 or 4 sizes (40 to 34 in steps of two). It is possible, if you work out your legs properly (squats, deadlifts etc) so they are decent size, then only the waist area needs to be rebuilt. Otherwise, if I were you, try locate the pants even if it means paying $500 - $800 for them. Consider it a good investment.

My legs are proportional. I run a lot and do some sort of squats pretty much every workout.

The pants look like they need to be totally re-made, which my tailor has done on a Zegna suit.
The rise is too long as well. I'll keep an eye out for the pants, but it's a pretty unique fabric so it may be hard to find.

Will post pictures ASAP! Thanks for the help.

Given your proportions, if you find a good fit in the lats and delts, at least get a tailors opinion. All OTR is going be a problem for your sort of taper.

Alright, please forgive the backdrop!

Here are a few quick pictures. As you can see, it's pretty ill fitting. I'm no expert, but it just feels "big".

To give you an idea, I wear a 15.5"-15.75" shirt but this suit makes me look fat!
