Hi everybody,

I went to a boutique that sells TF suits, and the SA said that Tom Ford suits use 3 layers of canvass in the jacket.

Is using 3 layers common in high quality canvassed suits, like Caruso's, Canali's or Zegna's? Or is it a TF thing?

Was the SA misinformed? Does adding layers create a better shape?

Thanks!

I think the SA probably meant there are three layers (in total) to the suit, which is a.k.a. fully canvassed.

They do use 3 layers of canvas in the chest- it is slightly firmer than you might find in other garments but it makes for a very clean garment.

My local tailor (Centofani) uses 3 layers of canvas in his bespoke suits so this does not surprise me.

I was once in the TF store in New York and asked the sales assistant if the suits were canvassed, to which he replied "what does that mean"?

Quite shocking given the prices they charge for their rtw items.

None that I have seen, but that doesn't mean they don't.
