I stopped by today and glanced at the Aldens ... they were marked 20% off. There was a good selection on display, but I didn't ask about sizes.

According to the NYTimes, the stock - which includes Aldens - is being liquidated before the shop closes and is converted into an Allen Edmonds store. I probably wont be able to pass by today, but perhaps someone in the area can report back as to the liquidation prices . . .

Austin near Grand Central have always been an exclusive Allen Edmonds store and in fact were the only AE store in the city, although some other stores sold AE shoes.
I bought my first pair of AE shoes there in 1972 but haven't been inside the shop since the 80's and was unaware they even sold any other brand. When I wanted a shoe I would just call a salesman and he'd deliver it.

I had the chance to stop in and talk to Eric today.
It seems both Eric and Allen Edmond's are happy with the terms of their agreement.
For those interested in Alden's, he has a large selection reduced to 30-40% off.

It's a shame, but there are good bargains to be had. Just picked up a pair of shell cordovans for 40% off the original retail of $630 for my medallion bluchers, and the staff there are ace.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
