I think it will be a slow burn type of thing... At the moment it will have a specialty attraction, leather nerds (oh hai!) and what not, but give it a year or two and people will start seeing the results of the aging process. I have little doubt that a 3 year old VTG will be so unusual, and have such a complex colour to it that there could be a little frenzy of people jumping on it.
As you said, you can't be flippant with these jackets. Just like a good TV show, give them time to breathe and they may just surprise you.

J Crew's description: We scoured the earth to obtain the finest vegetable tanned leather from widely recognized tanneries. We found a time machine and sped up the aging process to establish a 5 year old patina for you to enjoy today. (Limited edition item).

Drew, sorry for the delay, the gf is waiting to see how much car repairs will cost her :( You'll have my money this week either way, though.

Here's some quick fit pics to entice you, this is fresh from a soak and a few days of drying so it's stiff as a board. I might neatsfoot oil it and see what happens next. Getting oil into it definitely makes it easier to wear.

    yes, yes, yes

Drew, do you think you could post the upper arm/ elbow/ wrist measurements of the sample, just so that we can take a look at the ratios?

They're basically the same as any other. The fit of the sample is slightly off on me, so I don't really want to guide you with sample. Better to just use the standard chart, use the measurements and adjust lengths, maybe body widths as necessary, and go with something closer to our standard sleeve widths so as not to get too tight in there - don't size it too tight, that is all. No magic proportions or anything. I think the sample is about 6.5/5.5 at the elbow/cuff respectively, but I have the cuffs snapped open there.

Common problem with sizing emails lately - a lot of people getting their s2s (and possibly sleeve length) wrong.

-Your shoulders are approximately half your chest circumference normally, unless you have a notably larger/smaller chest than normal or work out heavily and affect that. From a normal unworked state though, your neck is about half your waist, your shoulders are about half your chest circumference, etc, etc.

If you are between 5'6 and 6' and are lightweight (110-150, combined with rising height) you are probably in the 16-17" s2s range, maybe more, maybe slightly less - and your chest is probably around 34-36.
If you are 5'7/8"-6'1" and maybe on the more normal side of skinny/slim at 120-155/160, you are probably in the 17.5"ish range maybe - 35-37" chest

    5'7/8"-6'1" and 'normal build - 140-170, rising with height - you are probably a 17.5-18" s2s, maybe 37-39" chest

    5'9'"-6'2" - 'athletic' build, 160-185? - you are likely to be 18"+ s2s, 40+" chest

around 6' and over, 190 and over - your shoulders will start at 18.5" probably, if not 19-20" and your chest will be like 42"+ if not 43 or 44"

In other words, I am getting people saying they are 13" s2s and stuff, there is no way. Just look at your chest measurement and see if you're doing it wrong, you should be able to tell if you're way off.

The best way to find the point on your shoulder to measure shoulder to shoulder across the front, and sleeve down from shoulder to where the hand widens:

    1. Stand straight up, lift an arm up about parallel with the floor
    2. Find the divot made over your joint as your arm is lifted, there is a tendon that runs across the front of the divot. Locate it and put your finger on top of it. You should basically be pointing at your shoulder joint.
    3. Drop your arm to your side, the divot will pop out, and your finger should be pointing at the spot from where you need to measure.

Weird pic to show the difference in this leather after an oiling and a suntan, before and after basically. This is barely phase 1, the jacket on the right is as above, but it's still young and I'd probably give it more oil before wearing it out, if it were me.

It's not bad, just that it won't stay white at all unless you're a vampire and you only go out at night.
