what with all the other wonderfull and usefull post. i have been thinking how many different kind of toe cap medallions there are available?

as many as there are stars i believe.
the differences can be very slight to a plethora of variations and there is just no limit as there is no limit to a blank white canvas and a palette of paint

well i guess you could just take a dot to dot book and play around with designs, but what i am trying to find out is more sort of the standard patterns than companies like EG and Lobb et al use!

The standards are the ram's head

The sort of fleur de lis type thing

And whatever you call the other triangular one, with the triangle/point at the bottom of the design

Variations on these themes or coming up with your own is, of course, possible.

I'm very partial to this medallion

and I've seen Lobb shoes with some wonderful ones. Most RTW medallions, though, I find uninspiring and if I were to ever get bespoke shoes, the much nicer medallions that they offer woould be a big reason.

i ve always noticed that too.

for some reason the bespoke models always have the better medallions. alot of rtw medallions are uninspiring.
i know for sure that the medallion design has nothing to do with the bespoke.

but why also the leathers used so much more beautiful than rtw?

and why the last also so much more shapely than rtw?


i would think that bespoke lasts since it is modeled after the peculiarities of one specific person's foot that the shoe would look blobbier.

Because bespoke makers pay extra for the choicest cuts. Think of it like steak. Prime goes to steakhouses and uber-pricey gourmet markets. 1% maybe are willing to pay that price. Choice goes to the better but not top markets. Select to the middle. Ungraded everwhere else.

There isn't enough top leather to go around, and generally speaking only bespoke shoemakers can afford to pay for the small amount there is. The economies of scale just don't allow even good RTW makers to use that stuff.

A good bespoke last looks quirkier, but not necessarilty blobbier. (It depends on the foot.) RTW lasts have to fit the widest possible variety of foot shapes within a given size. A bespoke last only has to fit one foot. All the excess and margin of error space can be trimmed away. Presuming the same model (i.e., oxford v. oxford), a well made bespoke shoe should always look sleeker and smaller than a RTW shoe on the same foot.
