Okay, so I didn't feel entirely honest posting this to the 'main" threads, so I thought I'd just put it here:
I haven't posted much, but I'm systematically working my way through the what are you wearing today threads, and lurking around the rest, and I've noticed a few trends I thought I could put together into a helpful compendium to make the stay of new members more enjoyable.
1. Senior members love it when you start your own thread. It's awesome, really, they spend all this time researching and loving the clothes they wear, and they're totally open to anyone who wants to start an entirely new thread about a small, short question that only a few people will actually answer with any honesty. The quick question threads aren't there for you. You're a new member. How could you be expected to find those? That's what this community is here for. To help you. Start that new thread about the details of a Jonas brothers shirt. Start it now. The more minor the question, the better.
2. Senior members love restating themselves. Again, this just goes to prove what awesome people these are, ready to be your own outsourced source of clothing knowledge. They love telling you exactly what you want to know, even though they just posted about that exact same thing in detail yesterday. Really, things like the Google search bar at the top of the page are just for members who want to look back and admire their huge corpus of work they've contributed to you new members and sigh with satisfaction. Don't worry about their time. It's what they love to do. Because that's what they live for. Restating themselves.
3. Senior members understand the value of hero worship. They know that you really, really, really like the style of the Jonas brothers. They know that your pre-pubescent heart leaps when you imagine being like them, and how much underage ***** that would get you. The'll happily spend hours hunting around for the latest pair of jeans worn by your latest boy-band crush. They understand. They were curious themselves.
4. Yes, you are special. Oh, and the senior members love it when you call yourself a long-time lurker. There's no way any of them would be able to tell if you're not. They like to think that you've been around to see your question asked, and been around long enough to understand that they like to repeat themselves. Truthfully, this does bring out sarcasm from them sometimes, but only on new member thread that posts a "long time lurker" thread. Especially when it has to do with one of those aforementioned pre-pubescent crushes.
5. Senior members are completely shocked and hurt when you call them gay, because they didn't answer your question to your liking. Because you started your own little thread, rather than using the threads pinned for basic questions, and because you didn't use the search feature, they did their best, and maybe a little sarcasm snuck through. You didn't like this, so you called them gay. They've never been called gay before. That's not an assumption anyone would make when they come to styleforum, and when most new members come in, they do enough research to realize that a lot of senior members are married, and may even have kids. Oh, and those that are homosexual genuinely appreciate your use of a derogative term for their community to a refer derrogatively to a different community entirely fine and okay and not pot-calling-the-kettle-black at all.
Okay, I'm too tired to continue this one. Can anyone else think of more? Does anyone else think a maual for new joiners to Styleforum might not be a bad idea?
Why do I keep writing things I know the people I meant it for will never read or understand?
