TN/H1-B Visa?

Pursuant to an earlier thread about a potential job offer in NY for me, a Canadian, I was starting to wonder how I would actually gain employment status in the U.S. I recently graduated from college in the States, but since I've been back working in Canada for 6 months, I believe that my OPT is no longer applicable. From what I've read, TN seems like the way to go because of the long wait for an H1-B (up to four months -- so I could conceivably get my TN and then apply for an H1-B while I'm already admitted under TN).

Does anyone have experience with this? How difficult is it to obtain? What's the process? I'm somewhat worried as well that my prospective employer has not inquired about my visa status (though one would think that between my currently working in Canada, and offhandedly mentioning during a first-round interview that I didn't work in the States right after graduation was because lots of firms weren't sponsoring visas, would tip them).
