Hello all,

I'm wanting to make my first purchase from TM Lewin but don't know which material for the shirts to pick from. I want something thats durable, long lasting but also feels nice and thick.

I've been told the Oxford and Poplin are the way to go but i'm not sure if this is true.

I will be working in a law firm so need something professional, which collar style collar is good for this ?

Thanks for all the help

Welcome to the forum @mochaman. Oxford, twill, and pinpoint would be my first choices...probably in their Classic collar.

An oxford cloth has a basketweave weaving pattern, and is rather lustrous looking, in most of its guises.

A Twill is a directional woven cloth with diagonal lines on it (the bias) caused by warp (surface and longtidinal) yarns going over more than 1 weft (fill and latidudinal/horizonal) yarns on each pass of the loom. I personally like the texture of twill clothes

A pinpoint uses a basketweave, but with a finer yarn.

I'll leave the TM Lewin specific recommendations to those with more experience with the brand.

Thanks heaps for the advise really appreciate it !

So would the build quality of all the material be the same ?
I'm just worried about buying a shirt and having it shrink or one construction method be cheaper than another.

The build quality will be the same regardless of the material.

And to prevent shrinkage, you should always handwash in lukewarm water and hand dry, in any case. Nothing will mess us good shirts easier than a washing machine and heat.

Thank you for the help LA Guy.

I have read through the forum and a lot of people seem to say that Poplin is the way to go for a formal environment, is this true ?

It's definitely not a bad recommendation, but the others work just as well.

Poplin or broadcloth is definite a popular choice for shirting. I like the slight natural sheen amd the smooth hand of poplin, but personally like shirts with a more textural hand.

All the types of cloth mentioned here are fine for anything considered "formal", up to and including black tie, and even possibly white tie.

BTW, if you want to notify anyone, you can use the @username so that they get a notication. You'll get a dropdown menu! On the mobile version, less so.

Cheers,

Fok.
