Yes before it was optional but at least the last time I was there they blocked all other floors and forced you to valet.

Pro tip: The basement of the 5th and Mission garage is the best place to park in the Union Square area, although the Sutter/Stockton basement is a close second.

Like others have said, I tip $1 when I pick up the car at a garage in NYC that has an attendant bring my car around or up for me.

I have only ever tipped a gas station attendant in NJ once because it was horrid outside and he cleaned my windshield for me, otherwise I just ask him to fill it up and pay as usual. I grew up less than a mile from the NJ border and the gas is far cheaper than in NY so I fill up there often.

I generally tip the valet $5. However, when there is a crowd exiting at the same time, my car always seems to come up first.

I tip in the very rare instance that I use the valet service in front of a restaurant; I usually try to find street parking. When at Union Square, I either park at 5th and Mission or Sutter-Stockton as neither one has valet parking. Occasionally I park at O'Farrell, but I NEVER tip the valet there. I figure the garage has valet so they can cram more cars in to make more money.

Do you pronounce it vallit or vallay?

I like to mix it up, personally.

Used to be commonly pronounced that way, it seems. At least they do in old movies and TV shows. Nowadays it's not as common for young people to say it, but I figured I'd try to bring back heavily anglicized foreign words. If it's good enough for Lord Byron and Shakespeare, it's good enough for me.

I have never understood the foy-yur thing. Also, please, we get paid with a cheque.

I will tip $5 for hotel valets. I would never utilize a restaurant valet service. I'll park twenty blocks away and walk.

Well I've been tipping too much. :(

I don't use the valet service unless I have to but I thought I was being cheap tipping 5. Now I won't fee bad when I hand the guy 2 bucks.
