Tightening of Flat Wool Cap

My wonderful Brooks Brothers flat wool cap (button style) has fit fine - that is unless I wear it under my duffle coat hood. When worn together, the cap typically keeps turning around - a nuisance. My "new" overcoat sets up the situation I'd like to usually wear the BB cap with the (alsoBB) duffle coat and I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea as to how to make it just slightly more snug.

So far my main hat shop guy says they'll install a strip of foam around the sweatband, if I'm willing to unstitch the band (adn perhaps even stitch it back). It's well sewed and I don't feel confident in doing this myself and perhaps spoiling the hat. I asked if the foam can be installed through a small opening and he said no and suggested a tailor shop. I happened to go to BB and, the hat being one of theirs, the manager offered to show it to their tailor. She brought it back saying he said the foam strip might not be spread out evenly - that there might be some uncomfortable lumps.

Any other ideas? I occasionally worn the cap with the hood the past few winters (coldest days) and the hat may stay straight for, say 5 or 10 minutes but generally keeps getting askew. Not nice to keep fiddling with this one the cold and/or snowy days with gloves, etc.

Since time memorial men have worn hats which, for some reason, are a little too large for their head. What are some standard remedies (other than purchasing a new hat)?

How do you feel about spending money on non-essential goods during the Covid-19 crisis?

  • I don't want to spend money at a time of economic uncertainty, even if I could afford it.

  • I feel compelled to spend to help small businesses that are struggling.

  • I reduced my budget for non-essential goods and I'm not spending at the moment.

  • Not much has changed for me and I'm still buying stuff I can't afford.
