Ties & The Three Piece Suit

Are there any special rules with regard to tie patters/colors when it comes to wearing a three-piece suit?

I just bought a dark charcoal three-piece with a very faint windowpane plaid and I am looking for a great tie. All the guys at the store are pushing these very colorful, very loud, Zegna ties but every picture I see of a guy wearing a three-piece suit shows him wearing a fairly dark/subdued tie. What should I be lookign for?

I think it depends on your own personal style more than anything - the windowpane pattern seems pretty versatile.

A three piece suit is usually viewed as more "business" than a standard two piece, so if that's the look you're going for than a more reserved tie is your best bet.

But you don't have to limit the three piece to business functions, and a colourful tie might be just what you need to lighten it up.

It's entirely your call.

I like 3 pieces because I have a few ties that are wider than I would be comfortable wearing (e.g. 4"), but they are visible underneath the vest. Any tie will work, it just depends on the function. Get a dark tie and maybe something with a floral or paisley pattern to lighten it up.

Zaf...in what city/country is this clothing store located?

May I suggest a plain burgundy/wine tie or a navy blue tie

There are no special rules with three pieces, but you may be able to wear louder and brighter ties than with a two piece becuase there's less tie showing. Wider ties, like landshark mentioned, work too since you don't get the bib effect that a wide tie can otherwise have.

Certainly you don't have to go with more conservative ties then what you would normally wear.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
