I am looking for good advice as to what ties (if any) I can wear with a black dress shirt and grey slacks. Does any tie work with a black shirt and grey pants? This is to wear to church. Thanks!

Don't wear black shirts. I think they look awful for formal situations. I think they are reserved for waiters and waitresses. I think that's why Michael Jackson above is eating popcorn.

So there is nothing I can do with this black shirt that I like so much? Does the tie usually need to match the shirt in some way? (i.e. no all-green tie with a blue shirt?)

You can wear a silver or burgundy tie with it.

But that look works best if you're selling cell phones at the mall.

Black shirt / gray slacks isn't a bad combination by itself. Could add a sweater over it in any number of colors, pastels come to mind.

No, the tie doesn't necessarily need to match the shirt. Plain white and light blue shirts are the most versatile.

Wear the black shirt with jeans when you go out at night. Besides that, stay away from black dress shirts.

Your tie should be darker than your shirt in pretty much any situation I can think of. If you can come up with some context to wear a black tie with your beloved black shirt, it might not look good but at least won't look jarring. Otherwise, I'd not do it.
