What width do you like your ties? The dominant fashion today seems to be the 3.5" but I personally have been trying to track down 3" ties because the skinnier look matches my slim frame. Also, I am 20 years old and prefer to dressy a little boldly. I believe I've seen some support of the skinny tie in the pages of GQ: Orlando Bloom was depicted on the cover with a 3" tie about 6 months ago and each issue since usually makes some positive mention of skinnier ties.

Shopping for skinny ties is very difficult. I've been going mostly to vintage stores, but so much of their selection is damaged, stained and made from poor materials such as polyester. Is it possible for a tailor to resize a fatter tie into a skinnier one? Are there any designers out there currently making new 3" ties?

I also have a few very skinny ties in the 1.5 - 2.5" range but I think 3" is perfect for me. What are your thoughts on the optimal tie width?

It depends on several factors such as your build, lapel width, style of suit, and to some degree, collar style.

I am fond of around 3.25, like T&A and many 'traditional' makers do. It compliments my frame well and is also a bit in at the moment. I don't know how much the fashion trend is affecting me but this is what I feel these days.

As for slim ties I think Prada, Helmut Lang and their likes make them and I got a Cerruti 1881 last fall that was not much over 3 inches.
