Hello Sf.
I was curious if there is some kind of guide to tie basics ward-robing?
Pardon me if there was such thread before, buy 6 pages of search didn't show anything.

The reason why I ask, even though i have over 60 ties, sometimes I can't find the right tie.
I feel like something is missing. and I think I should clear it all out of the useless, unpractical, poor quality ties, and start from the beginning, but this time take my time and slowly invest in a high quality ties, that will last longer, and give better versatility.

I figured following the Suit basics, I should have at least 4 basic solid/tone-on-tone/micropattern ties in:
Navy, Brown, Black, and maybe Grey.

The next step I think should be basics combined with patterns and to bring more colours.
And that's when I get a little lost in which order, pattern colour I should follow...

Any suggestions there?
Anything would be helpful.

First Things first manage your ties as per color: Then maybe it might be much easier for you to find the right one.

After that you would probably have perspective on which type and color to get.

On my experience:

I have never gotten a solid colored tie: Why? ............ Cause its too boring for me.....

(I would not say the same if the tie is not the usual silk tie)

IMO dont follow a system; pick stuff that matches you i.e. that you think is you. Reason I say this is that this is not a science you cannot follow an instruction manual and then say you're ready: U can get all the colors and patterns but in the end if you're not an "Animal Print Hermes Type" Tie Guy you'll regret getting it: even though the quality is good and people have reasonably good things to say about it

Just make sure you dont have too much of the same type in different colors

And if you don't like something dnt let your gf/wife/frnds/ family/partner convince you otherwise: They are a good source to try something new but it shldnt be just their persuasion that convinces you to buy the tie; it shld be the push to try it on and check it out...... not to buy

^^ Got it right. Stop buying a bunch of cheap ties and focus on simple, more elegant quality ties. Get some grenadine and cashmere if you can afford it, plain brown and navy are very very versatile.

Basically just stop buying ties because they're cheap and start buying ties that you can picture with many different outfits. Plain colored ties can be fine, but normal silk one's can definitely be boring, so pin-dots and slim stripes can help make it more interesting.

Watch B&S and whenever a quality tie that you like comes up for a good price, snatch it up!

Don't just dismiss solid ties as boring unless all you wear are solid-colored suits and shirts. Bringing all the elements of your look together requires complementary patterns as well as colours. Adding a patterned tie to a patterned suit and patterned shirt in the same outfit is going to create a very "busy" look and its way too easy to create a clash.

Hey ya I agree wth what your're saying

what I was trying to convey to the OP wth my comments was that a plain tie was boring for me cause its just not me: so if I followed his system I would regret it

Obviously as the scene in the 25th Hour goes

Frank Slaughtery: "You know you're wearing stripe shirt wth a stripe tie; you know that right?"

Mailroom Boy: "Ya... I do it for the ladies like..."

Frank Slaughtery: "The ladies ever tell you you look like a fuckin optical illusion........"

Actually after I clean up alittle bit in my tie drawer, I noticed shortages. Not only colours, but also patterns.
Most of what I have are stripes and Paisleys.
After wondering around on this forum for couple days, I noticed I could really use some pindots, foulards, and maybe checks.

In regards to Hermes animal print issue, I have way to many ties like that in style of Etro, Duchamp. I guess most of which are kind of impulse buys. I don't regret buying them as they are beautiful and make bold statement, but however they definitely limit my outfit potentials. Instead of starting with basics, I got all the fashion, complex pattern, very flashy and bold ties. Which I like a lot, but they do limit number of outfits I can pull off.

I don't like solid silk ties, as I would have to agree they are kind of boring, and remind me wedding ties. What I mean is solid colours, but with some texture.
Here is actually pictures of basics.

I would have to agree that sometimes they are boring, But I am not wearing them with solid colour shirts and ties. I always mix at least 2 patterns, and usually wear more than 3 colours. And in this sense as TheButler mentioned solid colour ties, kind of help to bring it together, or to settle it down a notch.

That's actually my new resolution.
and what's B&S? Is that Buy&Sell section on SF?

Since I figured there's no specific guide to basics (I guess, since there's guide on wardrobing your suits, and shirts, just have to pick the ties that go well the them), anything other colours/patterns/fabrics you could recommend me?

And beside that I have another questions. I noticed some ties are easier to knot than others. Probably has something to do with shape/lining/folds?. I remember once I was tying Zegna Tie in store, and It just blew my mind. The way it made the knot, it seemed like it was engineered and calculated to consider the thickness of fabric and shape of the tie to make a perfect knot. Still don't know what was it, but I still regret not buying it. But I still don't know what kind of characteristic of the tie made such a perfect knot. Any help here?

And whatever it is, I can test the tie for knots in stores, what should I look for when shopping online?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
