Tie for Banquet

This is my first posting.....first off I'd like to say how much I appreciate this forum and although I haven't posted before, its been a great resource. So...thanks!

I'm going to a banquet next week and would like to get a new tie for my wardrobe. I'm a shorter guy and seem to think "thicker" ties, or what seem to be normal ties, don't look as good as possibly a more narrow tie. I don't own any, but I'm contemplating going for it.

I'm 25 and have a pretty narrow build. I may wear my suit from Sisley which is black with a faint off black pinstripe or my gray DK suit. I usually go with a sisley or club monaco shirt because they seem to fit much nicer in the body and shoulders.

Does anyone have any advice as to where I can find a more narrow tie? (I'm in NYC) And...if going more narrow makes sense and/or is appropriate?

Thank you for any advice!

Traditionally semi-formal means black tie (formal being white tie). By the fact that it is call a "banquet" held in a fancy place on a rooftop rather than an ordinary "dinner" suggested to me that it would be a black tie event.

However, many clueless people use the term "semi-formal" to mean "informal" ie lounge suits.

You might like to check with the organisers to see what on earth they mean.

Narrow ties make a narrow face look even skinnier. Just as a narrow face is best balanced by cutaway collars, medium width ties also work best with this body type. Also the current trend is for lapels widths to be medium as well. Back in the '60s when skinny ties were trendy the lapels were also narrow to balance everything out.

I've seen pictures of Sean Connery pull that look off but he has a wider face.

There was some discussion of it here:
