Tie dimensions

Hi,

I noticed there are both narrow and broad ties. It's not very clear to me which brands make narrow ties and which make broad ties.

I read that T&A makes narrow ties and that Kiton makes broad ties. But what is narrow and what is broad? How can I find out?

I would appreciate some pictures and comparisons. By the way, how narrow/broad are the Stefano Ricci ties? I really like their style.

Different people make different widths at different times.

For the last 20 or 25 years, ties have mostly stayed between 3.25 and 4 inches. A few years ago they were on the wide side, close to 4. Now the skinny tie thing is back, so many people offer narrow widths. Even BB has the "University" line, which is on the narrow side.

The classic sartorial challenge is learning the rule of proportion -- tie knot size and width, collar size and style,and lapel width. Once you learn the rule it can be fun to break on purpose.
