Tie colors you would not wear with a charcoal suit?

My favorite suit is a nice dark charcoal three piece from wwchan. I like to wear it to work on Mondays with a white shirt and black shoes, very boring perhaps. With that combo, I'm under the impression that any tie will work with it, so I randomly grab a tie (with my eyes closed of course) every Monday to go with it.

My question is, are there colors which would possibly NOT go with such a combo. I'm of the belief that loose-knit ties look bad with the suit, and very skinny ties as well. So I just go with medium width ties, etc.

I'm over-thinking this of course, I just wanted some opinions. It all started when someone told me that my gold/green tie did not match the suit. I was thinking that the suit is grey, the shirt is white, the shoes are black, how could a color possible disagree with that....

Anyways, thanks for any opinions!

dark charcoal would fit with almost any colour, IMO. still, green probably not really a touch with it.

FYI, I dont like anything green

I think green could be fine, depending on shade. Yellow would be tough to pull off, perhaps. Although a pale yellow with a blue shirt might work.

Really the charcoal suit is a fine canvas for just about anything.

Most silk ties will look good with it but each would need to be assessed individually.

Most guys look best mixing the following combinations with a charcoal suit: White, navy, silver, pink, burgundy, black.

I think earth tones- golds, greens, tans, ecru, etc. are rather weak with a charcoal suit and rarely look their best. However, charcoal pants can often be paired with a jacket that contains earth tones and it will look good.

Agree on browns and tans, but I think green works fine as a general rule. Certainly I've worn a green/gold tie with charcoal before, and IMO it works fine. Gold ties generally wind up looking bad regardless, though maybe that's just because so many men wear them with blue shirts, which just looks bad IMO, as do all pairings where the tie is lighter than the shirt.

Any color will work with a charcoal suit (though you may want to avoid gray ties that match the suit). The question is what color/pattern are your shirts? And what sort of complexion do you have? The purpose of the suit, shirt, tie combo is to make you look good, draw attention to your face, and compliment your features.

While I think that almost any colour would go with the charcoal of the suit and the white of the shirt, I wouldn't wear anything earthy - brown, beige, ecru, etc. - with black shoes.

Ok wow, this thread played out perfectly. Thank you everyone. I can kind of see what you all mean about the earth tones, but it didn't really hit home until you mentioned the earthy colors "conflicting" with the black shoes. I hadn't really thought of that, and I am one who hates seeing black and brown paired together. In any case, I will reassess my use of browns, yellows, and related colors in that light.

Thank you!

And just in case you were wondering what MY favorite colors with charcoal+white shirt were, they are pastels in green, purple, or blue. (Not counting black/white/silver of course).

Also, on your suggestion, I am going to go look at navy and burgundy, I've not tried either of those colors with it yet.

And @PhiPsi32, I have a pale german/swedish/irish complexion, with blond (with a touch of brown) hair, and a red beard. This thread was only looking at the combo with white shirts, so rather broad of a topic. When trying to wear a shirt that goes with my complexion that isn't white, I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of where to start. I'm new to "dressing up" for work, and taking it one thing at a time. I have my charcoal and navy suits, a few nice pairs of shoes, and currently I'm experimenting with shirt colors/patterns with the navy suit(so far my favorites are blue/white checkers or pink with blue pin stripe). Once I get more comfortable with matching in the navy I'll move on to the charcoal i think! =P

What doesn't go with gray, especially charcoal grey?

On the other hand, you asked; so, I would never wear an international orange, cerise, or chartreuse ties. And only one or two of the deeper or more saturated shades of yellow would I wear, but not a pale yellow which is about the worst tie you can wear with any colored suit.
