Ideally I’d have just a tiny bit of backblade peeking out. Like a thumbnail, never more. Not for it to appear like I don’t care, which I don’t find it does if it’s just that little. To my eyes it adds a little extra depth and three-dimensionality. Much like a dimple does, which is also an affectation in most cases

You couldn’t have said it better

I dislike it simply because it reeks of a desperate attempt to be more casual about the choice to wear a tie.

Scrolled this whole thread and this is the comment that sticks out to me.

Heartily agree. Reeks of self conscious dressing and trying to "dress down." Made worse by usually pairing the look with very businessy suits - worsteds / pinstripes / etc.

When I tie my tie, if I have like 1/12 of an inch longer on the back blade I might leave it be. Anything more and I'm redoing it.

As to the discussion of using the keeper on the back. In generally I do think it is better to use it. Curiously a maker that I think is generally very well respected here, Vanda, doesn't even put keepers on their ties.

FWIW, redoing your tie to be sure that it is perfect, or not too imperfect, could be seen as reeking of self conscious dress. Possibly even more so that tying one's tie and heading out the door, regardless of where the two blades fall in relation to one another. I think, as with much of life, it all depends upon the intent.
