Planning on wearing a fairly slim-fitting 2B single vent suit (Conte di Roma) in this style Glen Plaid here with a white slightly-spread collar french-cuffed shirt to a party tonight. For the life of me, I can't figure out what kind of tie to wear, as this is a suit that I've never worn with a tie before. I have about 80 ties in a very wide variety of styles, so I'm fairly sure I can get close to any suggestions made. It's kind of a "hipster" event, but keep in mind I go to a lot of these things and am always comfortable in a suit at them; just never been to one in a suit like this... If you think white is wrong for the shirt, suggestions are welcome on that as well. My arsenal on that front, as with ties, is pretty varied. Oh yeah - shoes - black or brown? Thanks, John

If you're wearing that suit at night (damn the rules.), the shoes should be black. Personally, I'd go with a black or navy grenadine silk tie, or a similarly plain silk tie with some texture.

Narrow. And maybe a white handkerchief in the TV fold.

Even you, J, cannot escape the rules. You are willing to break one, but your conscience demands black shoes. Resistance is futile.

I'm a big fan of glen plaid. For choosing ties, the only trouble spot to avoid is a too-small pattern...you need some contrast with the busy pattern of the suit. So either go with no pattern or a medium size. I've worn repps, prints, and solids with glen plaids. You've got more options than you realize.

Solid black grenadine looks smashing with glen-plaid.

Or if you are particularly daring, try a medium sized houndstooth or birdseye tie with a glen plaid suit, of course in colours complementary to the plaid.

I'd go with pink to bring out that subtle pink in the plaid.

I'd go with pink or red as well to bring out the overcheck in the suit. Personally, I'd choose something that was not very busy. My choices from my closet would be the first or third tie below depending on the shade of the overcheck in the suit. My PERSONAL favorite with things like this is a solid with some depth in the weave because at an evening event the three dimensional nature of the weave does pretty things with low light... but that is entirely ME and just a suggestion. NOTE: Obvious brand preference below is not a blatant self plug, my closet is limited to one brand do to the 'eat your own dog food rule'.

'eat your own dog food rule'.
Hmmmm. Yet another rule I haven't heard of. I need to do more research.

Only applicable to the pros. Enlightened amateurs have no need.

We hear the same in the investment business. Someone pitches their fund and proudly says "we eat our own cooking" when discussing employees' personal investments in the product.

That's a very nice fabric.
BTW, What's the difference between glenplaid and POW patterns?

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll be going with a tie very similar to the one on the left...
