Given the great number of thrift stores in Manhattan, do any of you have any suggestions as to which ones I should go to first? I've been to the Goodwill on the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, since those are closest to where I live, but what other locations would you recommend?

And what about Salvation Army or other non-"chain" thrift stores?

Thanks in advance for the help!

There are the ones on the Upper East side, the more expensive thrift stores. I went through that circuit once and hit three or four, but when I'm thrifting I want outrageously cheap clothing, and am looking more for cheap things that fit well rather than quality things that may be altered to be very well fitting quality things, but are still slightly pricey.

I frequent, (as I live near them) the East Village Thrift around 11th and 2nd ave; the salvation army on 4th ave, around 11th; the salvation army on 8th st between 5th and 6th; the thrift store right around the corner from that salvation army; then on 23rd st, between 2nd and 3rd ave, there is a Goodwill, a Salvation Army, and a place called something like the Opera Thrift Store, which is a little more high-end. I have had good finds at all of these.

Sorry for the unorganized nature of this post. I'm only familiar with the Gramercy and Village stores. Remember to hit salvation army on wednesdays.

yes, i read that one already but thought the only one that precisely addressed my concerns was scruff's post. my original intent with this post was rests on the assumption that how you ask a question may elicit different answers.

thanks to willsw, though, for the help. much appreciated!
