Three short questions regarding tie size

1) I read all the time about 3.5 ties, 3.25 ties, etc., but are those measures from the thickest part of the tie? Are those in inches?

2) What is considered skinny, normal and wide tie?

3) Should the measurement be relative to the lapels in the suit? If true, how so (same width for example)?

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

1) Yes

2) Let your eyes decide it.

3) I've heard that the lapel at it's widest part should be the same width, as the tie at it's widest part

3.5" is the current standard, with a .25" variation, so you'll see a fair amount of 3.75" and 3.25". Beyond that, 3" and 4" are less commonly seen. But I think thinner people should wear 3", and that's what I wear. Here's me in a 3" burgundy grenadine: Anything less than 3" begins to be seen as skinny and trendy. I sell many of my ties in 3.5" and 3" widths.

The width of the tie in the picture look perfect. Just one question, is 3" the measurement of the tie at its widest section in inches?
