Three brands, three price levels! Woo.
Cheap: Uniqlo
Uniqlo is a brand that everyone should check once, regardless of your aesthetic or your price comfort. It's the Japanese version of Gap (well-designed, decent fitting basics) at H&M pricing with the penchant for awesome designer collaborations. They have an easy to use online shop, and their retail stores are popping up like weeds across the east coast and now in California. Here's a tip: HeatTech makes winter bearable!
Mid-range: RRL
And in the middle we have RRL, Ralph Lauren's Southwest/Americana love letter of a brand. RRL items fall into two broad categories: very designed (perhaps over-designed) pieces which can be tough to wear, and very basic, aesthetically neutral, but slim fitting shirts, jeans and accessories. Here's a tip: RRL suiting is often produced at the same high-end production sites used for Ralph Lauren Blue Label (Caruso, even St. Andrew's) but tends to be much cheaper and is marked down much deeper.
High-end: Saint Laurent
We're a couple years deep into Heidi Slimane's version of Saint Laurent, and every runway shoe has been a bit of the same: extremely skinny male models in very tights jeans which people inevitably talk about being "punk". Of course, there seems something antithetical about buying $1,000 jeans to whatever punk means, but hey at least the models are being collected just like they were at Dior Homme! Here's a tip: don't buy silver cowboy boots.
