Thoughts on tuxedo shoes?

Hi all,

I recently ordered a midnight blue shawl collar tuxedo with black lapel facings for my wedding (more details here: http://www.styleforum.net/t/516786/looking-for-advice-feedback-on-wedding-tuxedo/30#post_8300738).

I've been looking for shoes to go with it for a while now. I thought about patent leather at first, but my fiancee isn't a huge fan, plus I like the idea of buying something I can wear with suits and not just with the tux. The front-runner right now is these:
http://www.allenedmonds.com/shoes/m...s&prefv1=Black&prefv2=Balmoral/Oxford&start=5

I have a few pairs of Allen Edmonds already, and they're great. My only concern with these is that they may be slightly on the informal side (although in a way that's good, since I can easily see myself wearing them to the office and stuff).

What do you think? I've looked around a bit for a pair of wholecut balmorals, but I haven't found any that I wanted to buy. In my earlier thread, I had people recommend Meermin and Carmina, but since I'm not familiar with those brands, I'm a bit hesitant to try them.

Thanks! :D

Black patent leather pumps are correct for accompanying evening dress - even if you believe it appropriate for a daytime function such as your wedding - it certainly is NOT. Your fiancée has no locus whatever to determine how you dress - are you choosing her apparel for the event?

If you're going to wear a captoe, Carlos Santos is sleeker than AE: http://us.skoaktiebolaget.se/collections/carlos-santos/products/carlos-santos-black-dress-shoes

Or, you know, go hog-wild with some G&G: http://us.skoaktiebolaget.se/collections/gaziano-girling/products/ganzianogirling-sinatra

I wanted the Septieme Largeur black wholecuts for mine, but between the $CAN tanking and the risk of fitting by international mail, chose not to. Ended up with the Loding Roma, as Loding has stores in Toronto.

What is it about any of the wholecut oxfords you haven't liked that kept you from going that route?

Nothing! I just haven't really found any in brands that I'm familiar with. It seems like a rare style these days.

I'm on the fence on the AE Carlyles because they're not as clean as I'd ideally like - I like the look of wholecuts.

I also considered the Carlyle, but again, Canadian dollar :-/

If you're unsure of some of the brands, reading about them on SF helps, and this site may help you get a bit more comfortable with some of the brands out there.

E welting is too fat and inelegant for formal wear

If you are going to go through the trouble and expense of getting a tuxedo, get the proper shoes to go with them. Don't sell yourself short by trying to stretch one pair of shoes into contexts they were never meant to be in.

Give this man a medal!

Are you planning on repurposing the suit? The evening shirt? The bow tie? Using the cummerbund as a tea towel? No? Then why the obsession people have for tux shoes that can be wedged into another context?

I don't disagree with you. I'm just not a huge fan of patent leather. If I can get something that looks great with the tux but can also serve other purposes, that's a bonus.
