    Thoughts?

This looks to be a new release. It looks fairly sleek.

What I like most about it is the roomier forefoot. (I have a high instep)

I think I prefer the design over the Westchester and Randolph. The Westchester would be my second favorite.

As someone pointed out in the AE thread, it looks like they tried to copy the Alden leisure hand sewn.

I ordered a pair of Patriots in burnished brown calf from the AE site and they arrived yesterday. To me they are a nice alternative to the Alden LHS loafers at a more reasonable price and actually available in a width I can wear (B, I have a skinny foot). I know Alden is the holy grail but at $290 Cdn before duty and taxes delivered to my door with the current sale is much more palatable than what Brooks Brothers is asking for their Alden made Shell LHS (around $700 Cdn) at retail in Greater Toronto.

As for fit, I love my AE Patriots, for me they're great.

You aren't really comparing apples to apples here. One is calf while the other is shell. The shell Patriot actually retails at $595, which is almost as much as the Alden. The non-shell Aldens are about $475.

It looks like most other loafers. There's nothing special about them, IMO.

Well it is an ordinary penny loafer ... a variation on the Randolph ... with a silly marketing campaign.

It's a completely different last... with very different vamp and stitching

That is why I wrote "variation" and not "identical".

Ordered it, and have to say that it's quite wide. I have a rather narrow foot, but wear a 12 D in every AE lace-up I have. I got these in an 11.5 D, and while the length was ok, they were very wide and had some significant heel slippage. I'd reorder an 11.5 or 12 B, but didn't care for the styling as much in person.

Got mine today. Fits very well. The Westchester fit is problematic for me in the instep area. (Very tight) This is just about the right amount of room.

    Size 9EEE. Very wide feet.
