I'm a straight male who managed to make it through the entire telecast of the Academy Awards (while watching it in a room almost completely comprised of women, no less.).  Here are a few random thoughts on the show:

Chris Rock was one of the better hosts in recent memory, despite having to tone down his act.  I thought his opening monologue was funny, even the political stuff.  Don't bring Billy Crystal into the discussion of best Oscar hosts -- he's like the Asian kid in calculus class who wrecks the curve.

Speaking of the opening monologue, I would have loved to have seen Jude Law's reaction.

Best (un)intentional comedy moment:  Rock cracks that the Source Awards includes "singin', dancin' and shootin', and the camera pans to P. Diddy.

I realized what I don't like about Sean Penn.  It's not his politics, it's that he takes himself way too seriously and has no sense of humor.

Hilary Swank is the Tom Brady of Hollywood.  Two Best Actress Awards and she's just 30.  Hard to believe that she got her start on "90210."  I think Jennie Garth wants to shoot herself right about now.

I was thinking bad thoughts when I saw Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek presenting together.  Very bad thoughts.

Clint Eastwood must have one of the best second acts in Hollywood history.  A few years ago he was co-starring with an orangutan.

Call me cheesy, but I found Jamie Foxx's tribute to his grandmother touching.

It's only a matter of time before Cate Blanchett wins a Best Actress award.

I think Al Pacino and/or Dustin Hoffman may have been imbibing during the show.

Martin Scorsese is going to get an Honorary Academy Award in a few years.  Doesn't look like it will ever work out for him.

Wait - you're forgetting her real debut as "The Next Karate Kid"...

I had the same thoughts - but then I was wondering if that was the token hispanic portion of the show?

My favorite part of the show (As I've said in other threads - I slept through most of it) was when Chris Rock went to the Magic Johnson Theater and showed that the majority of the people out there haven't actually seen any of the nominated films - plus I loved the Albert Brooks and Martin Lawrence appearances.

were any of you guys aware of the controversy involving jorge drexler, the uruguayan who won the oscar for best song?

typically the nominees get to perform their song during the show, but this year the oscar organizers decided to replace drexler with antonio banderas and carlos santana. the hispanic community was very upset about this, and gael garcia bernal boycotted the oscar ceremony because of it.

i didn't see the show but i heard later that drexler went up to receive his award and started singing the song.

then i found out that beyoncÃ
sang a nominated song, in french, even though she wasn't the original performer and doesn't speak french.

disgusting...

They do this all the time, at virtually every award show. It's totally based on race, utterly predictable, and they often dip to the bottom of the barrel:

Salma Hayek on stage: shots of Jimmy Smits, Edward James Olmos, Cheech Marin.

Morgan Freeman wins: shots of Jamie Foxx, Angela Bassett, Oprah.

Next awards show, try to shout out the names of the people in the crowd they'll show, before they show them. It's fun.
