I'm a straight male who managed to make it through the entire telecast of the Academy Awards (while watching it in a room almost completely comprised of women, no less.). Â Here are a few random thoughts on the show: Chris Rock was one of the better hosts in recent memory, despite having to tone down his act. Â I thought his opening monologue was funny, even the political stuff. Â Don't bring Billy Crystal into the discussion of best Oscar hosts -- he's like the Asian kid in calculus class who wrecks the curve. Speaking of the opening monologue, I would have loved to have seen Jude Law's reaction. Best (un)intentional comedy moment: Â Rock cracks that the Source Awards includes "singin', dancin' and shootin', and the camera pans to P. Diddy. I realized what I don't like about Sean Penn. Â It's not his politics, it's that he takes himself way too seriously and has no sense of humor. Hilary Swank is the Tom Brady of Hollywood. Â Two Best Actress Awards and she's just 30. Â Hard to believe that she got her start on "90210." Â I think Jennie Garth wants to shoot herself right about now. I was thinking bad thoughts when I saw Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek presenting together. Â Very bad thoughts. Clint Eastwood must have one of the best second acts in Hollywood history. Â A few years ago he was co-starring with an orangutan. Call me cheesy, but I found Jamie Foxx's tribute to his grandmother touching. It's only a matter of time before Cate Blanchett wins a Best Actress award. I think Al Pacino and/or Dustin Hoffman may have been imbibing during the show. Martin Scorsese is going to get an Honorary Academy Award in a few years. Â Doesn't look like it will ever work out for him.
