Thoughts on odd DB jackets

Just a little opinion taking here: what are people's thoughts on having an odd double-breasted jacket, rather than a SB sports coat. I'm still building a wardrobe, and am trying to purchase in such a way as to allow for somewhat more flexibility. So can one get away with a DB odd jacket, especially in a fabric with some surface interest such as a flannel or a chunky tweed herringbone?

Same here. I have a couple of navy db blazers, but haven't seen a db odd jacket that I'd consider.

This is my Paul Stuart DB navy sportcoat, but I think the SB is more versatile. If you already have four other sportcoats, add an DB, if not, get more SBs first.

No to DB Navy Blazers. For the navy blazer, which I basically do not like (and I do not own one), SB is better IMO. As the main reason for having a navy blazer seems to be versatility, and as SB is more versatile, go for SB.

Until recently I did not even think of getting a DB sport coat. But last year I actually saw quite a few that I liked, for example, in a Zegna catalog. The ones I liked all had one thing in common: fairly bold stripes.

Really, nothing to go for unless you want to attract attention. Definitely nothing for the job interview. Defenitely something to consider once you are the boss.

Navy blazer only and six-button, not four.

Only navy. Maybe a tan or gray solid in a summer cloth. But these usually look better as full suits.

I like them, but I am a bit different than most. I have a cream linen RRL that I absolutely love. It also gets compliments in the real world whenever I wear it. I had some drunk dude actually genuflect in front of me in a martini bar one night when I was wearing it. he thought it was the coolest thing he had ever seen. It was funny for a while, but he did have a problem shutting up.

The odd DB jacket with any kind of pattern can be pulled off by a true dandy but is rarely successful for most of us.

I would recommend that if you want a DB with a nice pattern go for the full suit.

Can one do that? Yes. I've had two MTM DB odd jackets made in the last two years and generally receive compliments on them.

Is such a garment flexible? No. Wait until you've got the basics covered before indulging in it.
