Maybe with a half-belt and action back.

Nay, nay and thrice nay!

You're living up to your user name with a question like that!

OK?
End of the world type of mistake?

Discuss...

Patch pockets are inherently casual while the opposite is true of a dinner jacket...so do whatever tickles your fancy, but consider - is there a particular point you are trying to convey by deviating from convention here?

If you feel overdressed in the dinner jacket, there are better ways to tone it down. If you want patch pockets just for the sake of it, the choice is yours, but don't think they are serving any role outside of your personal amusement.

The only real place for patch pockets on an evening garment would be on a jacket like that; they would be perfect for a smoking jacket. As far as eveningwear goes, the right to a smoking jacket would usually go to the host who can wear whatever he wants because it's his party and he has the right to stand out.

Not that I WANT patch pockets, just saw this jacket http://www.tweedmansvintage.co.uk/product/blue-velvet-smoking-jacket-mens
and thought it was nice. I understand that patch pockets are more casual, just was curious if it COULD work.

Sure it could work. Even a few generations ago when being "correct" was more important, some chose to
put their personal imprint on what they wore. I personally HATE patch pockets even on sport coats, but that
is my idiosyncracy. A well-cut dinner jacket with patch pockets that fits properly would look fine.

Dreadful thought. Evening dress formal, patch pockets exact opposite.
