Thoughts on Chinos

What do you all think about Chinos? Somewhere in my style training years ago, I pretty much swore them off when they were a sea of ill fitting cuffs and pleats.

I wear Jeans or dress pants/suit pants, mostly jeans all the time.

I do have several pairs (khaki, navy and charcoal variations) of very well slim fitting, flat front, little to no break Chinos, but never really find occasion to wear them. Not sure why. Always opt for Jeans or dress pants.

Is my Chino aversion rare or common among my brothers here?

I work in an office environment and spend my time primarily in chinos and the occasional wool trouser. I wear them just like you mentioned (slim, flat front and no break). Just a great workhorse option IMO especially if you're in a business casual environment.

I agree with this.
On top of wearing them at the office, I've noticed few attorneys every now and them wear them in court. Haven't done that myself but I could certainly see myself doing it t some point.

I wear khakis/chinos nearly every day. Some time ago, I picked up a pair of Filson Guide Chinos off eBay and have been a fan since. I now have several pair and wear them regularly. Un-ironed, they look good when casual is needed. Iron them, and they look great for business casual (flat front, and I have no issues with wrinkling). And speaking of "iron", they're very durable to boot. I have a pair just for work, field and hunting use, and they're holding up fine. Filson no longer makes their Guide Chino (they show up on eBay now and them), but their current Dry Shelter Cloth Pant (and specs) looks like a dead ringer.

Another favorite of mine are my Bullard Field Pants from Bills. Very well made, but made from some seriously heavy material, though, so here in the southern US, it's often too warm for them. Regardless, if you can find a pair, I'd give them some consideration, as it might be a while before anyone makes a khaki like The Bullard Field again.

Oh. I love to wear Chinos. Its comfortable than jeans. Jeans you feel heavy. But chinos are light and you can wear it as a casual or as a formal. You can easily pair different color chinos with different color formal shirt, casual **** or tshirt. For eg. White casual shirt, white formal shirt will easily pair with Khaki color chinos.

chinos in general can go from very casual to more classy if worn correctly. it depends a lot on colour, fabric and so on but by combining different looks it comes as a very versatile clothing item

Although not mentioned in this thread, I like Moleskin trousers as an alternative to Chino's, especially when the weather starts to cool down a bit...

I am in the UK, so I am not sure how popular/common Moleskin is in the US. Over here its available in a variety of weights ect although it tends to be used mainly for clothing aimed at "country sports"..

I always find chinos to be a clean but relaxed option. A very casual Friday kind of look or when you’re heading to an informal night out with friends. Great call on the flat fronts. I find that pleats can make them look a bit too bulky.

Chinos are super basic. I'm a fan, but at the end of the day, your taste for a particular pattern is personal. I'm generally not a fan of denim or corduroy, so chino is my casual fabric of choice -- although I can dress it up on most occasions.

If you want to find a replacement trouser -- versatile, machine washable cotton, often cheaper than wool and more pleasant than denim, consider corduroy. A lot of guys sort of discount it, not really sure why. I don't like it, but it's very much worth considering.

Isn't moleskin a variety of chino?

Chinos/ khakis are mostly practical for me. They're acceptable in a more formal environment than jeans, yet won't disintegrate at the first hint of manual labor. If your pants are already dust colored you don't look dirty the second you touch a piece of stone/ tile as well, which is an important attribute in an architectural/design office.

They also are far more comfortable than jeans when it gets really hot.

yes and no
Have definitely seen moleskin trousers advertised as “chinos” but they are about as different from a cotton twill chino as corduroy trousers. Heavier moleskin will rumple but not wrinkle, unlike chinos. Really great fabric if it gets cool enough where you live.

I wear Chinos all the time, heavy ones from Cordings and BB, lighter ones from LE. All colors from Khahki, pecan, charcoal, olive, and Navy. Pleated and flat. I have resisted turn ups. My only bad experience has been BR, strange color, poor construction, bad fading.

Chinos? One word: Sunspel. Particularly their slim, stretch. Oh... they also make the Riviera polo shirt that Daniel Craig wore in "Casino Royale". And their boxers are the best you can buy.

Their boxers are certainly not the best, same quality as M&S with an uncovered elastic waste band. Hanro and many others are far superior.

Well for me, i simply love chinos. They give you a perfect blend of formal + casual. Plus I being a merchant of hoodies and other street wear, i love experimenting with them
