Thorogood American Heritage Moc Toe

First post.

In my research I could find very little information on this boot so hopefully you find this review helpful, especially if you are concerned with quality and sizing. The Thorogood Moc Toe is very handsome and considerably cheaper than red wing, I paid $110. Style wise they are not as refined, and much more rugged, it's a true workman's boot. The quality of the leather is identical to RW and I have heard they are sourced from the same tannery; therefore if you are familiar with RW you know what to expect. The boots are slightly heavy but I was surprised at the comfort; these could possibly be the most comfortable footwear I own! I suppose being a work boot comfort would be a prerequisite.

In terms of sizing, they definitely run a full size large. I bought them in a size 8US which fit perfect and still allowed me room to wear a wool boot sock without any heel slip. For comparison, I wear a 9US in running shoes, 8US in Chucks, 7UK/41EU dress - basically buy them in your dress shoe size and you will be fine.

To clarify, he did not "size down," he sized down from his sneaker size. Meaning, these run true to size (if he is wearing his regular dress shoe size in these)

Gonna jump in, in support of Thorogood, but only know the Epaulet collabs. I have these:

and they are pure genius. (please size down 1/2)

I also bought these:

which are more casual, but equally brilliant. (please size down 1 for these, since I had to return the -1/2s)

Both are horsehide, but remarkably different leathers. IMO, both are better takes on similar redwing styles, and even these marked-up collabs are cheaper than standard RWs. I'm also a Redwing fan, BTW. However, most the credit probably belongs to Epaulet who are really visionaries. Still, these are made in Wisconsin, and great quality.

The ones you posted are pretty nice; dunno if they beat redwing for looks though. Please let us know if you find other good-looking 'normal' models. My quick searches were not very successful, but the brand has great workwear pedigree.

Both of those look great and I did not come across them on the website.

I agree that the RW have the edge in looks, but on par in terms of quality and construction. For the price you can't go wrong, the RW are twice as expensive but definitly not twice as good. Plus, I couldn't justify wearing a $250 pair of RW through salt/snow winter as I intend to with the thorogood.

I also own the Moc Toe's and am looking at the 685 Epaulet edition boots. Anyone happen to own both to verify to order the same size?

Thorogood makes great boots.

Sorry, does "dress shoe" sizing refer to the Brannock device -sized foot measurement?

I haven't stepped into a Brannock device to measure my size since 3rd grade. But for sake of comparison I wear Loake's in mayfair last 7F UK, Hugo Boss 8D US

I bought mine of Amazon, but they are all over eBay as well. Great boot, I actually prefer them to the Red Wing Moc Toe.

I bought a pair of these from Endless (size 10B, the last pair of dress shoes I bought was 10.5B) and found that the toe box was really long. I don't know, maybe that's just the way this style of boots is generally constructed? I basically felt like I was wearing clown shoes. When I was trying to decide whether to keep them or not I found an old Styleforum thread complaining about this with respect to the Epaulet boots, but I can't track it down now.

Racove, these are some other normal looking Chippewa (same company I believe) boots that I was considering--the This Fits tumblr posted about them. Zappos also sells a similar style.

This is nice alternative if you are looking for a Moc toe workboot at a reasonable price. Size down a half size. I already tried going down a full size and they were too small. Maybe not as heavy duty and warm as some of these but I believe this boot looks better than anything else posted. At a half size down there should be enough room to fit a good mid weight wool sock.

Those are basically the LL Katahdin's without a cap toe. They are made by Chippewa.

Nice find. I was thinking about picking up the LL bean, but these are basically the same boots and at a much better price.
