Checked out a Pink shop in Bangkok yesterday and was very surprised to see shirts made in Thailand, Morocco, China, Eastern Europe. The salesman told me that the only British tailoring for Pink was for his MTM/Bespoke shirts. Nothing hanging on the racks looked anything special and neither did it feel anything special. How low can this brand sink?

On another tack, the only shirt in my summer travels that screamed 'Buy me" was a Canali white super tissue thin shirt that had a price tag of over $200. Looking at the fabric and feeling its silky texture I concluded that Jantzen has no cotton fabric anywhere near this class and I guess that's fair enough considering Ricy's shirts are one quarter the price, but where in HK can one have a shirt made of beautiful fabric that won't break the bank? I'm thinking $600-700HK.

If I recall, H&K no longer says that is made in England, or the UK... however the quality is still the same. The problem is less where the shirt is made, but rather HOW it is made and with WHAT kind of cloth.

Holy sh*t!

And here I am, always thinking that shirt-making, like suit-making, is so complicated like brain surgery and that only people of European extraction are capable of such fine work. The browns and yellows are only good for making cheap plastic toy!

I think the problem is more that Chinese factories are famous for cutting corners to save on costs, watering down the glue etc.

Holy sh*t!

Another revelation for me!

So not only are the brown and yellow workers no good at doing anything meticulous/skillful, they also go behing their European Masters' backs and cut corners.

Damn, this sounds worse and worse.

I recently bought a shirt as a gift at Thomas Pink. What was puzzling to me is that the shirt I chose was made in the UK and cost the same as those, on the same shelf, that were made in Thailand, where the cost of production is much lower.

No need to be sarcastic, I was simply schooling the newbie / OP.

Or that Western companies looking to outsource to China are already cost concious and may take the step of cutting corners in their own spec?

Modern consumer products are value priced, not cost plus.

Pink trades on its brand, not country of manufacture or quality (which are not so important to people not on these boards).

agreed

but to win the contracts as the lowest price factory. it has been known that factories will cut corners to save costs. so they're not just ripping the consumer off, but also their parent clients.

In theory...
the factories are all controlled by the same QC people. they should be using the same sewing machines. sewn to the same specs, using comparable linings, buttons, thread.
fabric quality as well.

but we know that fabric woven in italy in the same construction and yarns just feels a bit better then quality's from Asia and India. though, I have seen excellent quality fabric from Asia, there is a bit of a difference.
it makes no sense to ship European fabric to China, so they will be using local fabrics and trim, which might be a bit inferrior to that used in Europe.
now the needle should be the same as well, but sometimes certain factories are behind in quality.
sometimes items end up on the selling floor that are of inferrior quality.

And yes, it is appaling to know that you are paying the same price for garments where the cost to produce was roughly half.

Yup, you are right.

I only meant to show that its not only the manufacturers who cut corners.

Most Pink stuff is pretty unimpressive, especially for the price. That is the new brand Holt's in Canada has brought in and is trying to push, but I think a lot of it will hit the sale racks.
