My mother just called.

There is a problem with my unborn nephew's lungs. They are injecting him with some stuff now, and going to C-section him out in 90 minutes if all is well - and if not, they will take him out in the morning.

He is two months premature, but apparently, other than the lung issue, is big and strong for a 7 monther (about 5 lbs).

Still, this is not a good thing.

Sometimes I hate being so far away. Feel so helpless. God I hope it's OK.

Most likely steroids to promote development of the lungs. They usually mature by 32 weeks or so if I remember correctly. Might be 34-36. I forget. They're trying to prevent respiratory distress syndrome.

Hope all is well with yout mother and sister (in-law?).

My mother was 3 pounds when she was born. Also a premie.

ya, sister in law. Thanks for the medicopointers.

Just spoke to my brother, he is very upbeat, but no doubt pretty torn up inside.

45 mins til they advise him of what comes next.

thanks boys. Can report that I am now an uncle to the tiny 5.5 lb Isaac James.

Huge huge huge relief.

He will be in a humidicrib for 6 weeks - 2 months.

He has a lung infection and needs a lot of breathing assistance, and his liver is insufficiently developed, so apparently he will start turning really yellow in the next couple of days...not out of the woods yet, but all things considered he is doing OK.

My nephew just went through a similar ordeal. He seems to have come out of it OK, and I'm looking forward to meeting him this week. Hang in there.
